Gex is pronounced “Jay.”

Gex and his wife, Judy, raised their six children on the family farm in Verona. Their grandchildren now visit for “cousin camp.”

Gex has spent much of his career in technology, developing software, consulting on information technology and helping bring internet service to rural communities. He took on the challenge of reaching places people had been told could not get high-speed service.

He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida. He previously attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1970 to 1972.

Gex served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1991 through 1992 and in the Kentucky Senate from 1993 through 1998. He returned to the Senate in 2023.

His Christian faith and commitment to individual liberty shape his public service. He supports religious freedom, Second Amendment rights and parents' responsibility for their children's upbringing and education. He believes private property, free enterprise and accountable government are essential to a free society.

In the Senate, Gex has supported income-tax reductions, transportation investments and changes to utility regulation. He has also proposed reforms to Kentucky's healthcare regulations and continues working on property-tax relief.

Gex brings his technology experience to his work as co-chair of the Information Technology Oversight Committee. He also serves as vice chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee and as a member of the Education, Families and Children, and Transportation committees.

Gex serves Carroll, Franklin, Gallatin and Owen counties, along with portions of Boone and Kenton counties.
